Introduction

In Switzerland, mobility is an essential part of daily life. With nearly 6 million vehicles on our roads, the need for car insurance becomes obvious.

Indeed, whether you own a car, a motorbike or even a scooter, taking out car insurance is not only a legal obligation but, above all, an essential precaution to protect your financial interests and ensure your safety as well as that of other road users.

With our Optimis car insurance guide, we'll guide you through the intricacies of this complex system, explaining the different types of coverage available and their crucial importance in protecting your assets and your peace of mind.

The Basic Car Insurance Coverages

When you take out car insurance in Switzerland, you can choose between several types of coverage, each offering a different level of protection. The three main basic coverages are third-party liability, partial casco and full casco.

  • Third-party liability is the minimum compulsory coverage for all motor vehicles in Switzerland. It covers material and bodily damage that you could cause to third parties in an accident for which you are found liable. However, it does not cover damage to your own vehicle.
  • Partial casco is an optional coverage that provides additional protection in the event of claims such as theft, natural events, glass breakage, fire, collisions with animals, marten bites and vandalism.
  • Full casco or collision casco is the most extensive coverage you can take out. It includes all the guarantees of partial casco, but also adds protection against damage you could cause to your own vehicle in an accident for which you are liable. This coverage is particularly recommended for new or high-value vehicles.

I generally recommend carefully assessing your needs and budget before choosing the coverage that suits you best. Third-party liability is essential, but partial and full casco provide additional protection that can prove valuable if something unexpected happens on the road.

The Supplementary Car Insurance Coverages

In addition to the basic coverages, there is a whole range of supplementary guarantees that can be added to your car insurance policy in Switzerland.

  • Passenger insurance: This guarantee covers injuries sustained by drivers and passengers in an accident.
  • Parking damage: This coverage protects your vehicle against damage caused by unknown third parties while your vehicle is parked.
  • Extended glass breakage cover: This option extends coverage to include damage to headlights, glass parts and similar items.
  • Mobility/Assistance: This coverage provides assistance in the event of a breakdown on the road.
  • Loss of use: This guarantee provides a replacement vehicle if your vehicle is off the road after an accident.
  • Gross negligence cover: This option provides protection against claims or reductions in benefits in the event of gross negligence by the insured driver.
  • Increased market value: This guarantee ensures compensation higher than the vehicle's current market value in the event of theft or total loss.
  • Bonus protection: This guarantee helps avoid an increase in the insurance premium after a claim by maintaining your current bonus level.

The Deductible in Car Insurance

The deductible (franchise) is an essential element of any car insurance policy in Switzerland. It represents the portion of costs that the policyholder must pay in the event of a claim before the insurer begins to pay compensation.

A higher deductible leads to a lower insurance premium, while a lower deductible results in a higher insurance premium. It is therefore a trade-off between the amount you are willing to pay in the event of a claim and the cost of your insurance premium.

It is important to note that each type of coverage may have its own deductible. It is therefore crucial to understand the details of your insurance policy.

Bonus-Malus in Car Insurance

In Switzerland, the bonus-malus system is a mechanism used by insurance companies to assess the risk associated with each driver and adjust the car insurance premium accordingly.

This system is based on a simple principle: drivers who have no accidents or claims are rewarded with a premium reduction, while those who have accidents see their premium increase.

The bonus-malus system works on levels, where each driver is assigned to a certain level based on their driving history.

We advise driving carefully and obeying the rules of the road in order to maintain a good driving history and benefit from substantial premium reductions.
