Our expert explains everything you need to know about home contents & liability insurance in Switzerland.

1/ What is it?

Home contents & liability insurance is the perfect ally to protect both your home and your finances when something goes wrong.

Private liability insurance (RC) covers you if you cause damage to someone else or their property. Imagine your dog bites a passer-by or your child accidentally breaks the neighbour's bike: that's when liability insurance steps in to avoid financial trouble.

Home contents insurance protects everything in your home: furniture, personal belongings, etc. In the event of fire, theft or flooding, this insurance is there for you.

When you combine these two insurances, you get home contents & liability insurance. Many companies in Switzerland offer this dual package, which covers you both for the damage you might cause and to protect your own belongings.

2/ What does it cover?

Wondering what home contents & liability insurance is for in Switzerland? In short, it's the best friend of your home and your wallet! Here's what it usually covers:

  • Fire, lightning and explosions: No panic if lightning strikes or a fire breaks out.
  • Theft: Whether it's a burglary, a break-in or even a robbery with violence outside.
  • Natural disasters: Floods, storms, avalanches, landslides… The lot!
  • Water damage: Leaking water pipes, faulty washing machines, cracked aquariums, etc.
  • Glass breakage: Windows, glass furniture, sanitary fittings… It's covered!

On top of all that, home contents & liability insurance covers your private liability if you cause bodily or material damage to others. In short: your belongings inside your home and your personal liability are protected.

3/ Is it mandatory?

In Switzerland, private liability insurance (RC) can be mandatory in certain cases, especially if you are a tenant. Landlords like peace of mind and often ask their tenants to provide proof of liability insurance.

For tenants, private liability insurance therefore becomes almost mandatory at the landlord's request. In other cases it isn't compulsory, but it is strongly recommended to protect you if you cause damage to others.

Home contents insurance is mandatory in certain cantons such as Vaud and Nidwalden for fire and natural-disaster cover. In these cantons, you must take out a policy with the cantonal fire insurance company.

4/ Liability + home contents insurance = combine them together!

Opting for combined private liability and home contents insurance is the ideal way to simplify your life and protect your home. Here's why:

  1. Time saving: Taking out two insurances in one is fast and efficient.
  2. Less paperwork: No more endless admin — everything is combined in a single contract.
  3. Complete protection: You're covered from A to Z with a combined policy.
  4. Savings: You often get a discount by choosing a combined offer.
  5. Easy customisation: Add or remove coverage options according to your needs.
  6. Family cover: The insurance protects all family members.

5/ Liability + home contents — at what price?

Prices vary depending on the insurer, the chosen coverage and the value of the belongings to insure. Compare offers to find the best value for money.

6/ How do you terminate an existing liability & home contents contract?

Want to terminate your home contents & liability insurance in Switzerland? No worries, here's what you need to know! To terminate, you'll need a few details:

  • Your personal details (name, address, etc.)
  • Your insurance policy number
  • The desired termination date
  • A reason for termination (nothing very detailed)
  • Your signature

Then send your termination letter respecting the notice period, which varies from 1 to 3 months before the end of your contract. If you forget, your contract will be automatically renewed for another year.
